About us

The Surgical Foundation is the charitable arm of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI), the professional organisation for general surgeons and related specialist surgeons in Great Britain and Ireland. The Surgical Foundation is a Registered Charity, Number: 1068016

Our Aims

  • To achieve the highest standards of emergency surgery in Great Britain and Ireland.
  • To support research and excellence in Surgery.
  • To promote international surgical education and training.

Achieving the highest standards of emergency surgery

Emergency surgery is one of the most difficult and demanding areas of surgery. The Foundation is determined that outcomes from emergency surgery in Great Britain and Ireland match the best in the world. The Surgical Foundation will foster research into the best ways of delivering emergency surgery in both rural and urban settings. Research grants and travel Fellowships will allow the best ideas worldwide to flourish at home. It may be possible, in the future for the Foundation to fund a research Professorship in Emergency Surgery.

Support of Excellence in Surgery

Each year the Foundation awards the prestigious Moynihan Travelling Fellowship to an outstanding young surgeon from Great Britain or Ireland. This allows the winner to enrich his or her skills and to use these to benefit patients and the surgical community at large. The Foundation also recognises the best performance at each sitting of the intercollegiate surgical examination with an Association of Surgeons medal.

Promotion of International Surgical Education and Training

The International Development Committee (IDC) is part of the Foundation with the specific aim of strengthening surgical education and training in underdeveloped countries. It has a particular focus on Africa and Sri Lanka. The IDC supports surgeons going abroad to train local doctors and to support local medical schools. Surgical Skills courses are taken to those countries to help their trainees become surgical teachers of the future.

A recent Foundation initiative provides International Bursaries to allow trainees from underdeveloped countries worldwide to attend the annual Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland International Surgical Congress. Each bursary winner can also spend time in a local hospital, to experience a Western approach to medicine and surgery. In 2010, sixteen Bursaries were awarded from a strong field. Feedback from the Bursary winners has been extremely positive.

100% of your donation will go to the charity because ASGBI is donating the office support for The Surgical Foundation. Thus, as the Surgical Foundation does not have any administration costs, all proceeds will, therefore, go towards the charitable work of the Foundation.

If you are a UK tax payer, you can make a “gift aided” donation which allows The Surgical Foundation to reclaim a further 28p for every pound that you donate.

We would be hugely grateful if you could include a donation to The Surgical Foundation with your dedication.
